Americans are generally known for liking a lighter coffee brew than their European counterparts. Legend has it, that when the US Armed Forces in WWII poured hot water into their espressos, the café Americano was born.
If you like the flavour and freshness of espresso, but prefer a lighter body with less bitterness then the Americano might just be your beverage. To make an Americano, pour a shot of espresso straight into a large mug. Then add up to 200ml of hot water but you can experiment to find just the right intensity for you. Semi-Skimmed milk can be a great addition to a delicious Americano if you prefer your coffee white.
If you want the Americano style of coffee, but want to preserve the crema (that thin layer of foam on top), you can also try the Long Black. Just pour your hot water into your glass first and then add your shot of espresso.
