Reducing Energy Consumption
and Waste

As part of the NESCAFÉ® Plan, we also look to reduce our environmental impact within our production processes. Here in the UK we already have some examples of initiatives we've undertaken to do our bit.

At the Hayes and Tutbury coffee factories, 20% of the sites’ energy needs are provided by using spent coffee grounds as fuel which reduces the need to use fossil fuels and also means the grounds no longer go to landfill.

Dalston factory, where the NESCAFÉ Café Menu range is produced, now sends zero waste to landfill by introducing waste segregation systems. This has been verified by the external agency Bureau Veritas.

Preserving Water and biodiversity

To release clean water from the production of our NESCAFÉ Café Menu range at our Dalston factory, we invested £845,000 in an advanced treatment plant. The by-product from this process is recycled as fertiliser by local farmers. The installation allows land that was previously used to disperse excess water to be left to nature. 20 acres of willow trees have been planted on this land and as the trees mature, they are attracting a variety of wildlife thus enhancing local biodiversity.

50% FEWER LORRIES

Demonstrating our commitment to Responsible Production, we've launched a great NEW compact 150g NESCAFÉ refill pack. As this new refill is so compact and therefore takes up less space, we can fit twice as many of the new 150g refill packs onto a pallet than the previous ones. That means we’ll need 50% fewer lorries to transport the same amount of coffee enabling us to reduce our road miles per tonne of coffee distributed.

Dr Richard Swannell, Director of Design and Waste Prevention from Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) has expressed his support for our packaging innovation, commenting “It is great to see that Nestlé’s new NESCAFÉ refill pack represents a major step forward in logistical efficiency allowing twice as many packs per pallet, reducing road journeys by 50%. It also uses less materials, carbon and water in comparison to the previous refill pack.”

Available in NESCAFÉ ORIGINAL, NESCAFÉ GOLD BLEND AND NESCAFÉ GOLD BLEND DECAFF 150g variants. Also available NESCAFÉ GOLD BLEND 300g refill.

Reducing the environmental
impact of our packaging

Our NESCAFÉ glass jars are recyclable. The lid can also be recycled through various local council locations.

By optimising its design, we have reduced the weight of our NESCAFÉ Original 100g glass jar, cutting annual glass consumption by approximately 470 tonnes.

We also sell NESCAFÉ to a variety of businesses and have reduced the packaging on our single-serve stick packs by 10%.
